Known Flight IDs
In order to avoid collisions, it's going to be necessary to avoid stomping on one another's "Flight ID" WSPR telemetry packets. The Flight ID comprises the first and third character in the callsign field in a Type 1 WSPR packet. So, for example, the callsign "QL6EXB" would be flight ID "Q6".
Please note, there is "controversy" over whether a Flight ID may begin with the letter "1". The "1" prefix is unauthorized by the ITU, however the following 1x prefixes have been used:
1B (North Cyprus):
1A0 Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Rome, Italy)
1A0 Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Rome, Italy)
1C, 1X Chechnya Rep. (Russian Federation)
1L is being issued by Liberland Amateur Radio Association and is referred to as temporary prefix of Liberland
1P Seborga Principato (Italy)
1S Spratly Archipelago 9M0
1P Seborga Principato (Italy)
1S Spratly Archipelago 9M0
1Z has been used in Kawthoolei, an unrecognized breakaway region of Myanmar
Some people have chosen to use "1" since the ITU has not sanctioned it, while others argue it is in use, and therefore should no be used for FlightIDs. I include it in this list for completeness, for those hams who chose to use "1". You do so at your own risk. If you intend to use the letter "Q", please tell me "Q" not "1" when you are looking for a Flight ID. Some people chosen to say "1" when they mean "Q" for reasons I can not comprehend.
I've created a table of those flight ID's that I'm aware of. If you have updates, please comment on this post, and I'll update the table.

Put me down for Q8 and Q9 - Bill WB8ELK
ReplyDeleteI'll need Q3/4 for K6RPT - Alan W7QO
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'll use 00 in the coming weeks for testing and a launch in August. - Stefan DK3SB
ReplyDeleteGot it!
DeleteFor our next flight, I would like to take 11 if possible. Flight with 00 went up last week. I had some issues with getting 00 packets that were obviously not from the balloon, like 000AAA, 000AAB etc., seemingly from broken decoders. These were causing some glitches in the flight path. Maybe using 00 should be avoided for this reason?
ReplyDeleteThanks for putting 11 in the list. 73 - Stefan, DK3SB
Stefan. Done. :-)
DeleteHi Mike, I checked with Dave VE3KCL and he said I could use 02. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteGot it, and updated. Thanks :-)
DeleteI'm thinking about a WSPR-equipped buoy project. Is this the definitive callsign list? And is anybody working on a more generic telemetry protocol? For example, I have no use for the "altitude" field, and would end up re-mapping many of the telemetry bits to carry more relevant data, but I would rather avoid ad-hoc and mysterious custom definitions. And if we risk collisions with only 20 callsign IDs, perhaps there are ways to use the other WSPR fields and still retain compatibility with the WSPR reporter database? I would love to work on this if there is any interest. - Paul Elliott - wb6cxc
ReplyDeleteI've finished with my balloon experiments (for the moment), please remove me from 'Flight ID/channel 02'. 73, Bob ZL1RS
ReplyDeleteThank you :-)
DeleteHi Mike,
ReplyDeleteI have been using 17 and 18 as well. - Bill WB8ELK
Updated. Thanks!
DeleteAnd 19 too - WB8ELK
ReplyDeleteI will use 08 for STELLA19 and 10 for STELLA 20 in June.
ReplyDelete72 Dan DL6OW
Thank you. I've refreshed the "last used" dates. :-)

ReplyDeleteI will use Flight ID / channel 02 in July (with permission from Bob ZL1RS.
ReplyDelete73 Serg, UB8SFY.
Thank you. I got behind on updates. Google hasn't emailed me the last few comments on this thread. It's up to date now. :-)
DeleteHi, Can I have channel 12 for PE2BZ please ? I note 30 ID's in this list, but the article on https://qrp-labs.com/flights/s4.html#schedule says there are 20 channels available. How do I set the callsign for ID 12 when only 0 is valid as first character ?
ReplyDeleteID 09 is aasigned to PE2BZ for HAB flights (confirmed by mail but not updated in the list yet)
DeleteNow I saw the list. I asked for 15, which should be Q5 for YO3ICT. Do not worry, as I am on the third flight and no interference so far so I should be primary on Q5. As far as I know, the ones starting with 1 are not valid.
ReplyDeleteI'd reserve 12 for an upcoming flight. Cheers, Stefan, DK3SB!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteCan I request:
13 - KD2KDD - Douglas Malnati
14 - KN4IUD - Mark Malnati
Thanks!
doug
Doug, I've gone ahead and reserved 13 and 14 as requested. If you stop using them, please do let me know so that I can free them for others. Also, if you could email me at kd2eat at gmail.com, I'd like to have your direct email for "renewal" purposes down the road. Thanks! - Mike
DeleteGreat. Just what we need. More JUNK in the sky to crash my plane into.

ReplyDeleteIf you go to Wikipedia and look up ITU prefix you will find that there are many more prefixes available. For example "any letter + 1", "X + any number", E8, E9,J9, " letter O + any number" , T9, "U + any number"
ReplyDeleteI would like to checkout the 19 ID for K9YO
ReplyDeleteI apologize for the delay. I have reserved ID 19 for you.
DeletePlease help - I don't understand what the second and third column in the above table is for (:x4 ? :x6 ?)
ReplyDeleteI just noticed that if you have a id beginning with a number and you have low voltage, the callsign will start with three numbers. Will this cause any problems with wsprnet?
ReplyDeleteCan I use ID 15? Register after me, UB8SFY.

ReplyDeleteDone. SOrry for the delay.
DeleteWe need to open up the telemetry packet ID list. We have many people taking up blocks which block all the rest from playing nice and following IDs and time slots protocol.

ReplyDeleteHi Mike, can you please assign a slot for the Vilnius University Ham Radio Club balloon callsigns LY1BWB / LY1XD ? Any slot will do. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteCould you please put LY4NZ on channel 11 for flights from 23/08/2021 to 23/10/2021 ? (or other channel if not available)
ReplyDeleteHiya, Are you using any kind of time-slotting code, or do you need to use all slots in that FlightID? We're strongly encouraging people to switch to time slotting, since we have so many people flying Picos now.
DeleteIf I understand you correctly, I use minute "0" for call sign and minute "2" for telemetry; I can change that if these are not available
DeleteJonas, perfect, thanks. I've updated the table with your reservation. Mike / KD2EAT
DeleteHi Andrew here G8SRV. could I ask for the first 0x6xxx slot. Telemetry at :x2. Hope to launch next week. Many thanks!
ReplyDeleteI've reserved the slot for you. Best of luck with your flight!
DeleteHi again. Thanks - Much appreciated! Hugely grateful if we could also reserve 0x6xxx time slot x4,:x6. Andrew G8SRV.
ReplyDeleteAssigned as requested. Sorry for the (huge) delay. I keep missing these blog notiications.
DeleteHi, could you please extend same slot for LY4NZ until 2022 May 1st
ReplyDeleteIt has been extended as requested. Thanks for keeping us up to date.
DeleteI am a relatively new HAM person and have so far only used APRS and WSPR for balloon tracking. I've successfully flown two pico balloons around the world and am hoping to do more. So far, I have just been using WSPR standard packets, etc. and tracking here:
ReplyDeletehttp://wsprd.vk7jj.com/
For future flights, I would like to use the multipacket system which, I believe, involves transmitting a 2nd packet that is identified with a flight ID. I need to know how to do this and I do expect to get some help from the maker of the transmitter. This seems to be an unofficial Flight ID tracking page...
The 2nd and 3rd columns of the table listed are Callsign Slot & Telem Slot and I have no idea what that means. I also understand that somebody, somewhere needs to run a server of some sort to scan for both packets, combined them properly and then format them to go onto APRS.fi Would like to get some help with that also.
Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
Can you please issue me a Flight ID?? Callsign: KC3GMG
ReplyDeleteIs anyone maintaining this Flight ID list??? I've been backyard testing with Flight ID 01 - so far, no complaints. Will need an official Flight ID for upcoming balloon flight. Balloon flight should be within a week.
ReplyDelete06 x:2 and x:4 assigned.
