Known Flight IDs

Known Flight IDs

In order to avoid collisions, it's going to be necessary to avoid stomping on one another's "Flight ID" WSPR telemetry packets.  The Flight ID comprises the first and third character in the callsign field in a Type 1 WSPR packet.   So, for example, the callsign "QL6EXB" would be flight ID "Q6".

Please note, there is "controversy" over whether a Flight ID may begin with the letter "1".  The "1" prefix is unauthorized by the ITU, however the following 1x prefixes have been used:

1B (North Cyprus):
1A0 Sovereign Military Order of Malta (Rome, Italy)
1C, 1X Chechnya Rep. (Russian Federation)
1L is being issued by Liberland Amateur Radio Association and is referred to as temporary prefix of Liberland
1P Seborga Principato (Italy)
1S Spratly Archipelago 9M0
1Z has been used in Kawthoolei, an unrecognized breakaway region of Myanmar

Some people have chosen to use "1" since the ITU has not sanctioned it, while others argue it is in use, and therefore should no be used for FlightIDs.  I include it in this list for completeness, for those hams who chose to use "1".  You do so at your own risk.   If you intend to use the letter "Q", please tell me "Q" not "1" when you are looking for a Flight ID.   Some people chosen to say "1" when they mean "Q" for reasons I can not comprehend.

I've created a table of those flight ID's that I'm aware of.  If you have updates, please comment on this post, and I'll update the table.

  5. For our next flight, I would like to take 11 if possible. Flight with 00 went up last week. I had some issues with getting 00 packets that were obviously not from the balloon, like 000AAA, 000AAB etc., seemingly from broken decoders. These were causing some glitches in the flight path. Maybe using 00 should be avoided for this reason?

Thanks for putting 11 in the list. 73 - Stefan, DK3SB

  7. I'm thinking about a WSPR-equipped buoy project. Is this the definitive callsign list? And is anybody working on a more generic telemetry protocol? For example, I have no use for the "altitude" field, and would end up re-mapping many of the telemetry bits to carry more relevant data, but I would rather avoid ad-hoc and mysterious custom definitions. And if we risk collisions with only 20 callsign IDs, perhaps there are ways to use the other WSPR fields and still retain compatibility with the WSPR reporter database? I would love to work on this if there is any interest. - Paul Elliott - wb6cxc

  13. Hi, Can I have channel 12 for PE2BZ please ? I note 30 ID's in this list, but the article on https://qrp-labs.com/flights/s4.html#schedule says there are 20 channels available. How do I set the callsign for ID 12 when only 0 is valid as first character ?

  14. Now I saw the list. I asked for 15, which should be Q5 for YO3ICT. Do not worry, as I am on the third flight and no interference so far so I should be primary on Q5. As far as I know, the ones starting with 1 are not valid.

  20. If you go to Wikipedia and look up ITU prefix you will find that there are many more prefixes available. For example "any letter + 1", "X + any number", E8, E9,J9, " letter O + any number" , T9, "U + any number"

  41. I am a relatively new HAM person and have so far only used APRS and WSPR for balloon tracking. I've successfully flown two pico balloons around the world and am hoping to do more. So far, I have just been using WSPR standard packets, etc. and tracking here:

    http://wsprd.vk7jj.com/

For future flights, I would like to use the multipacket system which, I believe, involves transmitting a 2nd packet that is identified with a flight ID. I need to know how to do this and I do expect to get some help from the maker of the transmitter. This seems to be an unofficial Flight ID tracking page...

The 2nd and 3rd columns of the table listed are Callsign Slot & Telem Slot and I have no idea what that means. I also understand that somebody, somewhere needs to run a server of some sort to scan for both packets, combined them properly and then format them to go onto APRS.fi Would like to get some help with that also.

Any help you can provide will be appreciated.
